In September 2025, I worked with Toiyabe Indian Health Project to record and document their annual Walk for Life event, to raise awareness about suicide in indigenous communities. From the TIHP website: "Many Native American communities experience an elevated suicide rate. Suicide takes an enormous toll on families and friends, leaving our Native communities devastated by this national health problem. The best way to prevent suicide is to promote cultural practices that increase protective factors and reduce risk. Toiyabe Indian Health Projects Family Services Department holds an annual Walk for Life on the fourth Thursday in September. The purpose of the Walk for Life is to bring awareness and education to the subject of suicide in Indian Country. Did you know that suicide is ranked as the eighth leading cause of death for Native American’s of all ages? Toiyabe Indian Health Project hopes that Walk for Life will unite our communities with the common goals of preventing suicide and ending the stigma that surrounds depression and other mental health disorders."
